In fact, the Robekes owned most of the 200 block of New York Avenue at the time, much of which was pasture for the Roebkes cow and Kate's large garden. Louis worked long hours up the street as the proprietor of the Roebke Furniture Store on the south side of the square in the Sinnings building. He kept the shop open until 10 p.m. every night which prompted him to install Holton's first telephone wire at the store so that he could listen to his daughters practicing the piano. As the family grew, an addition was made. Over the year's, the land was sold off. Now the house that was Kate's wedding gift is owned by the Jackson County Historical Society where visitors can discover more stoies about the Roebke's. |
