About this Exploration:

Located on the west side of Kansas Highway 5, the earliest burials date back to the 1820s and ceased in the early 1960s.

In 1880, attorney H.T. Green wanted to sell the west block to a farmer to raise crops.  John C. Loss had three small children and a grandson buried on the land and saw it differently.  To prevent the destruction of the graves, Mr. Loss deeded Green block ninety, a cow, and sixty dollars that his daughter Louisa Loss paid in exchange for the land.  Mr. Loss deeded the two blocks of land to the Old Town of Delaware Community Burial Ground.

The cemetery fell into disrepair over the years.  After several attempts by community groups to clean up the cemetery, the Lansing Correctional Facility inmates took over maintenance of the cemetery.

For burial information contact the Leavenworth Public Library Reference Department 913.682.5666 ext. 206 or visit www.leavenworthpubliclibrary.org
