About this Exploration:

Some of the native sons and daughters, feeling that a history should be recorded of the pioneers who settled Ness County, met and discussed plan how this might be accomplished. They held their organizational meeting on November 15, 1930 and elected the first officers. Membership was a dollar a year or ten dollars for a life membership.

Having no building, display cases were built and installed in the hallway of the Ness County Courthouse.

A few years later the Pembleton family purchased the old Echo Print Shop at 209 E. Sycamore, a small native stone building built in 1882.  It had been the first school house in Ness City and was donated to the historical society. An addition was built in 1969 to be used a a meeting place and for more room to store and display artifacts.

In March of 1992, the historical society purchased the large, two-story, historic Beardslee building on the corner of Pennsylvania and Sycamore. Built in 1900, the historic structure had been vacant for a few years and would provide needed space for the museum's constantly increasing number of artifacts. One of the county's best known landmarks, the Beardslee building became the new home of the Ness County Historical Museum.

The old school house building still remains part of the museum's history and is a complete replica of a one-room school house.

In 2009 the Historical Society placed a metal building to the east of the school to serve as the Oil and Agricultural Museum for Ness County. On display is the first firetruck for Ness City and many other items of historic nature.

The Ness County Historical Museum welcomes all visitors.
Open Tuesday-Thursday 1-5 p.m. or by appointment.
