About this Exploration: Nettie Smith Chubb was born in Smith Center. She was a school teacher who becoming interested in art and developed her talent to become a fine artist. Watercolor was her favorite medium. She did illustrating for several magazines as well as school papers. After her parents died she rented her home and set out for California. In the spring of 1949 she headed back to Smith Center. A side trip took her to the Grand Canyon and unbeknown to her, romance. Nettie was sketching on the rim of the canyon when some her work blew near the feet of Nelson Chubb who was just passing by. Nelson was also interested in art. They soon became well acquainted. Nelson and Nettie continued their acquaintance by letter and fell in love.They were married in the Smith Center Presbyterian Church in 1949. The two traveled over the 48 states and part of Canada as well as Mexico. The couple donated artwork to the Smith County Courthouse, to the local Christian Church and the Post Office. Among Nelson's talents were finishing woodwork and fine furniture. He made many picture frames for he and Nettie's pictures. Before marriage to Nettie, Nelson formed and led a Boy Scout troop in Chicago for handicapped boys. His sons from his first marriage were both polio victims. One of the pictures among his keepsakes shows him with this special group of Scouts. |
