About this Exploration: Just as commercial irrigation began to stake its claim on the agricultural landscape, Will Christian knew Grant County had something special. Announcing his land as one of the most bountiful and abundant in the state, state legislator Christian invited 12 of his legislator friends to his home for a home-cooked meal to prove it.
In 1941, Nora Christian’s meal of completely local produce included beef, pinto beans, squash, cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, whole-wheat rolls, strawberry jam, watermelon, and milo doughnuts. The menu hasn’t changed much; however, the number of guests and food has greatly increased! The dinner now serves over 2,000 guests made up of local and state politicians and Southwest Kansas residents.
The dinner takes place every third Tuesday in September, and admission into the event requires a $6 locally-designed button with proceeds going to the Grant County Scholarship Foundation.
