About this Exploration: The building that now houses Hendricks Hardware in Alma has had only two owners throughout its entire existence. It was built in the mid 1870s by Conrad Mueller as a saloon. The building stayed a saloon until Prohibition, and it was then turned into a hardware store by Conrad's son, Gus Mueller. At that store, items were sold including furniture, hardware, coal, and even gas. The building was eventually bought by Marvin and Gwen Hendricks on January 1, 1952. Marvin and Gwen still currently own Hendricks Hardware. Most of their customers are from in and around Wabaunsee County. They also do business with various plumbing, electrical, and contracting companies. Hendricks Hardware has been a huge part of Alma's past and present commerce, and after 50 years, it is still thriving! Open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
