About this Exploration:

String Town was alive and well in Florence prior to the 1951 flood that covered Marion County, Kansas. Up until that time the road that extends from 5th street in Florence ran over the Cottonwood River Bridge and out to what is now highway 50. String Town was located East of the Cottonwood River along a beautiful brick highway that was old highway 50.

There were different businesses located along that stretch of the road. It was called String Town because main street was strung out East of town along theCottonwood River . You can drive along this road and imagine what existed before the flood. There is some remains of the "ice house" on the east side of the brick road. four walls are still standing but the roof is long gone.

The only building standing is a beautiful house that was raised three feet off of the ground in order to withstand the regular flooding of the Cottonwood River. Everything else was destroyed by the flood. There was a large gas station with a busy restaurant and there was a damn and a mill on the Cottonwood River that could be seen from String Town.  The end of the nature trail located along the west side of the Cottonwood River by the Walnut Tree Farm is where the old damn and mill were located. There is still cement and stairs that lead to the mill. It can be seen from the gazebo type of structure that was built above the cement remains of the damn and mill.
