Great Bend City AuditoriumAddress:
1209 Williams
About this Exploration: Constructed in 1938, the structure was described by architects and builders as the most outstanding example of the use of architectural concrete west of the Mississippi River.
Arched trusses were built to support the forms for the concrete Z-D type roof shell. Thirty thousand board feet of lumber was used in the construction of supporting false-work which was used first for the west half of the auditorium and later skidded to the east half of the building. The complete arch of the roof is 125 feet wide and the concrete is 2-5/8 inches thick at the top of the arch and at the lower edges, near the haunches or supports, varies in thickness from 5-1/2 to 6-1/2 inches.
The building is still used for community concerts and youth recreation activities.
