About this Exploration:

Mr. FrenchThe story of Roy E. French is remarkable, and one that spans 106 years.  Born in 1897, he soon learned the value of hard work when his father died when he was eight years old.  After years of working in a variety of fields, Mr. French settled in the Gridley area and built the R.E. French Oil Company and French and Winterscheid, Inc. into multimillion dollar companies.
Because Mr. French had to drop out of school during his 6th grade year to help support his family, he valued education.  In 1981, he started the R.E. French Family Educational Foundation.  Each year, the foundation awards qualified high school graduating seniors college scholarships in southeast Kansas and Doniphan county. In addition, they have given grants to the area libraries and schools.
Besides being an oilman, Mr. French was a beekeeper and a well known English Springer Spaniel trainer.  He has been inducted into the Spaniel Field Trial Hall of Fame in Grand Junction, Tennessee.

On November 10, 2003, his family and friends said "Vaya Con Dios."
A book could be written about the numerous stories of his generosity, accomplishments, awards, travels, and adventures.  The foundation office is open Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 12:00 noon and 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.  Stop by to see photographs, articles and other memorabilia that depict his life.  Sarah and Fran will be glad to give you a tour.
