About this Exploration:

 Father Juan de Padilla Monument

Father Juan de Padilla, a Franciscan friar was one of 300 Spaniards that traveled with Francisco Vasquez de Coronado from Mexico in 1540. They were searching for the " Seven Golden Cities of Cibola" but only found adobe pueblos. They traveled southwest and discovered the Grand Canyon.

In 1541 he came with Coronado to the land of Quivira in Kansas. They spent the summer in the villages of the Quiviran Indians before returning to New Mexico.

Father Padilla came back as a missionary. In 1542 he was killed by the Indians, and became first Christian martyr in what is now the United States.

In 1904, a monument was erected for Father Juan de Padilla in a city park named for him. There is a Kansas Historical Marker about Father Padilla on U.S. 77 south of Herington.
