Memorial Wall for Allen County VeteransAddress:
1 Madison Avenue
About this Exploration: Iola has a wonderful Memorial Wall dedicated to Allen Countians who have served in all wars. Veteran's of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Kansas National Guard are honored by name on the wall. Family and friends have purchased the plaque or the brick that lies in front of the war memorial in order to have their loved one's name on this memorial. Two panels have just been completed on the wall, so if you're wanting to add yourr loved one, call the Iola Area Chamber of Commerce to ask where to go to get an application.
To find the names, the Allen County Historical Museum (ACHM) has a notebook with the list and locations of all names. (ACHM is located directly west of the memorial on the corner of Washington and Madison Avenues.)
Veteran's Day is remembered annually in November and includes Prisoner of War/Missing in Action remembrances, taps, air crafts, a parade, a picnic and patriotic music. Iola's show of respect for local and national veterans is a must see.
Merchants on the south side of the Iola Square say there is never a day in which they don't see folks looking at the memorial. Most of the cars that stop are travelers passing through town on U.S. Highway 54. The site is quite impressive and worth a stop!
The War Memorial and Veteran's Day event is located on the south side of the courthouse square along Madison Avenue.
CITF/PRIDE, along with the Kiwanis and veterans group, are selling banners for the big light poles around the square in order to raise money to fix some of the deterioration of the wall.
These banners be hung from October 15th to November 15 to honor our veterans. Check into how you can buy a banner for your love one. Call Carla at city hall....620-365-4900.
