Rock fences once graced many of the farms southwest of La Cygne. These fences were constructed using a method called dry stone. The name was derived from the fact that no mortar was used to hold the rocks together. Instead the builder would select rocks that would interlock together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Although many of these fences have been destroyed by corporate farms in the process of expansion, a few have survived the test of time. Some of the best examples can be seen on K-152 southwest of La Cygne between Prairie View High School and K-7. The fences are on private property, but are easily visible from the highway.
