About this Exploration:

The Hill School Building is the oldest building in the State of Kansas in continuous educational use.  Built in 1873, of native stone.

Construction of the magnesium limestone school house was started in 1873 and opened to students in 1874.  Cost of construction was $15,000.  A 500 pound bell hung in the belfry. When the school opened, grade school students had the first floor and the auditorium, older students had the second floor.  Over the years, the building has been remodeled several times and used as lunch room, manual training, administrative offices and housed different academic departments of the high school.  At this writing, the second floor is the high school English and Business Departments.  The lower floor has special education and a technology lab.  “It is still an outstanding landmark and one of Marion’s most historic buildings.”

Visitors are welcome to look around, but should check in with the high school office when school is in session.
