In the early 1870s the residents of Ellinwood were aspiring, courageous, honorable, thrifty people.  Many of the German residents were devout Catholics, and in 1876 they organized a parish and began building a church dedicating it to the patronage of St. Joseph.  



This beautiful church made of limestone has a steeple that extends far above the tree line. With a working clock on the south side of the steeple bell chimes to announce each new hour keeps the community  on a timely schedule.
